Don Days of Summer

October is here and in 2 weeks, we'll get a chance to rekindle our memories of DON - one of the most captivating characters Big B has ever played of. Don...The Chase Begins Again, is a remake of the 70s classic. Its not a new phenomenom for Bollywood to remake Hollywood movies for desis but remaking old Indian movies (I say Indian, which include Hindi, Tamil, Marathi and other 23 languages) is catching up. Not only that, audience who never had a chance to catch up with stage performances, called Nataks in Gujarati, are loving their remakes too.

Don will be Farhan Akhtar's 3rd movie (don't even talk about his disastrous 2nd movie). His first movie Dil Chahta Hai set the trend for India's youngsters like a cool freshman course - Fun 101, which basically introduced us to big screen HDTVs (at Aakash's place), mature relationships (Sid), hanging out in Goa and ofcourse, fancy pants (cmon, most of them were wearing shiny leather tights at the sendoff party). On the other hand, this one may probably set a trend of names for newborns like Kamini, Roma, Jasjit (JJ), Vardhan, Narang(?), Mac and ofcourse Vijay (or Rahul?).

As for the character Don, he is a bad guy who deals with suitcases and bombs. His style, charisma, attitude and dialogues captured the late 70s and early 80s with such popularity that my grandfather (whose interests ever went beyond Ramayana and Mahabharata) watched the original in theater.

Coming back to the new movie, Big B's role is played by King Khan. I do not want to comment on his casting (certainly not before watching it!) but I do like to say one thing - he has to do a f***ing good job as Don to even come close to Big B's DON image.

As for the remake's music, its mesmerizing! Trust me, if you haven't heard Don Revisted (by Midival Punditz) or Main Hoon Don (sung by Shaan) for 2431 times (or more), you are not Donworthy. I am sure my iPod hard drive must be having scratches where the DON songs are stored at. Keep listening them and they'll blow your mind away. Listen at max volume in your car! At one point, you'll feel the power of Don in you and probably end up looking for a suitcase and big,blue/red/green sunglasses when you leave your car.

As for the remake, no complaints from me! Once you understand the character, you realise why someone would wanna bring out the true essence of DON, again.

Now, I'll leave you with some of Don's evergreen dialogues:

Jeetna meri zid nahi, aadat hai
Aray deewano, mujhe pahchano, Kahaan say aya, main hoon Don!!!!!! (Updated)
Don zakhmi hai toh kya, phir bhi Don hai!
Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi namumkin hai!
Aww Gawd, Geittin Laitte ... Some otha time bebe!!
Kya tumhe maut se darr nahi lagta?!

and finally (my favorite)....
*Knock Knock*
[A loser in a squeaky tone]: "Yes, who is it?"
[Don]: DON...Don...don....
